Its impact cascades into other parts of your life, and the gravity of it can be suffocating. Dancing with Ghosts is an upcoming narrative adventure game by HumaNature Studios, led by the illustrious Greg Johnson, creator of ToeJam & Earl. A wholesome, heartfelt interactive narrative set in a living Thai village, it blends story-driven adventure with light simulation elements. But that description alone doesn’t quite capture the essence of this game. This is an empathetic experience about exploration, love, healing, and the little things we can all do for one another.
You play as Mai, a 15-year-old Thai girl grieving the loss of her parents. During her journey, she meets Pim, an 11-year-old ghost who has lost her memory and become trapped in the world of the living. Together, they help villagers work through grief, healing, self-forgiveness, and cultural spirituality. The game bravely explores questions about life and death while presenting them through a beautifully crafted world that feels both intimate and authentic.
At first glance, Dancing with Ghosts appears bright and welcoming. The colorful environments, charming characters, and peaceful village life create an inviting atmosphere. Yet beneath that warmth lies a deeply emotional story. Every interaction feels purposeful. Whether helping a villager complete a task, reconnecting someone with a forgotten memory, or simply listening to their struggles, the game constantly reminds players that kindness and understanding can have a profound impact.
The inspiration behind Dancing with Ghosts is deeply personal. Four years ago, Johnson lost his daughter. Then, in 2023, his family lost nearly everything in the devastating Lahaina fires. The combined weight of those tragedies forced him to rebuild his life from the ground up. Rather than allowing those experiences to consume him, Johnson channeled them into a creative project centered on healing, remembrance, and human connection.
That authenticity is perhaps the game’s greatest strength. While many games tackle grief as a narrative device, Dancing with Ghosts approaches it from a place of genuine understanding. The emotions never feel forced or manipulative. Instead, they emerge naturally through conversations, relationships, and moments of quiet reflection. It is less concerned with dramatic twists and more focused on the everyday process of moving forward after loss.
Johnson was also inspired by Thailand’s cultural perspectives on death and the departed. In many Thai communities, honoring loved ones who have passed remains an important part of daily life. These traditions help shape the game’s spiritual themes, offering players a perspective that may be unfamiliar but feels deeply respectful. To ensure cultural authenticity, Johnson assembled a team that includes Thai and Southeast Asian artists and contributors. Their influence is visible in everything from architecture and environmental design to clothing, music, and character interactions.
Visually, the game is stunning. The hand-drawn art style is colorful, expressive, and comforting. Every scene feels crafted with care, creating an atmosphere that encourages exploration. The village itself feels alive, populated by residents with their own struggles, hopes, and stories to tell. The contrast between the vibrant presentation and the heavier subject matter creates a unique emotional balance. Rather than clashing, the two elements complement one another beautifully.
During our preview, it became clear that the village is more than just a backdrop. It functions as a living community where relationships matter. Helping one resident can affect another. Conversations reveal new opportunities for connection, while acts of compassion gradually strengthen bonds between characters. These moments reinforce one of the game’s central themes: no one heals alone.
The emotional weight of the story looms over the player; but there is an underlying sense of hope. The game acknowledges pain without allowing it to define its characters. Through Mai and Pim’s journey, players are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences with loss, memory, and forgiveness. It is a delicate balancing act, and one that Dancing with Ghosts appears poised to accomplish.
The Black Developer Fund played an important role in helping bring the project to life, providing support during its development. Johnson has spoken about wanting to share the joy, gratitude, and sense of community that continue to sustain him despite the hardships he has endured. That philosophy resonates throughout every aspect of the game.
Dancing with Ghosts left a lasting impression during our time with it at The MIX. In an industry often focused on spectacle, competition, and action, it stands apart by embracing empathy and emotional honesty. It is a game that asks players to care, to listen, and to understand. If the final product delivers on the promise shown in this preview, it could become one of the most heartfelt narrative experiences of 2026.
