The gaming content and media space is filled with passionate, creative individuals, many of whom I’m fortunate enough to call friends. One such friend, Jon Clarke, Co-founder of XboxEra.com, has just announced an exciting new project that has me thrilled.
Unveiling Console Wars: The Card Game
Jon Clarke and his talented team at XboxEra have been working on a secret project, and it’s finally time to reveal it: **Console Wars: The Card Game**. According to Jon, it’s “a satirical, parody-filled spin on the gaming industry and the competition that’s always existed between video game platforms, publishers, and games themselves.”
My Hands-On Experience
I had the privilege of testing out the game in Los Angeles during the 2024 gaming events in June with other content creators, where I CRUSHED the competition ;-P, and I walked away very impressed.
Gameplay Mechanics
The fundamentals of the game are straightforward: 2+ players battle for ownership of four full sets of intellectual property (IP) across well-known gaming genres such as FPS, Platformers, and RPGs among others, to win the Console Wars. As you play, you cultivate as many fans (via cards) as you can and use them to protect your IP from being taken by other players and changing gaming market conditions. Market condition cards can totally upend strategies and change the playing field in the best (or worst) ways.
A Must-Play
The gameplay is addictive and fun, thanks to cards designed to sabotage your competitors at the most opportune moments while battling to win the war. The IP cards are hilarious riffs on games and franchises you know, and the market condition cards are filled with gamer-centric jokes that kept me entertained.
Even in its raw form, when I played I could tell they had something special on their hands. Now that the project is ready to show, the team is launching it on Kickstarter.
Support the Kickstarter
I urge all gamers to check out the Kickstarter campaign and back it because, selfishly, I need this game to exist. Community funding is crucial for this project to come to life and I foresee this becoming a go-to game for friends getting together or at the next IRL gaming meetup/event.
Play at Gamescom 2024
XboxEra will have a booth at **Gamescom 2024** and host play sessions for attendees who want to check out the game. Needless to say, you’ll find me there at some point defending my title, and I hope to see some of our readers there too.
